Philly Cheesesteak Sloppy Joe’s

Looking for a quick dinner that will please your Philly Cheesesteak lover? I have been experimenting with ways to substitute lean ground chicken for ground beef and it works well in this recipe. By the time you add all the delicious ingredients from a cheesesteak sandwich, you have magically blended the flavors to make a tasty and healthy meal. Your family is going to love this lightened up version so much they won’t be saying, ” Where’s the beef?”.

Philly Cheesesteak Sloppy Joe’s

Serves 7 @ 3SP each

1 pound of lean ground chicken

1/2 cup diced onion

1/2 cup diced green pepper

Salt to taste

Pepper to taste

1/2 tablespoon minced garlic

2 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce

1 tablespoons A-1

1 tablespoon cornstarch

1 cup beef broth

1 8 oz package of provolone cheese slices

Cook chicken, onions and peppers until the chicken is slightly browned.

Add seasonings, A-1 and Worcestershire sauce. Stir until well blended.

Add the cornstarch and stir well.

Add the beef stock and cook until the mixture thickens.

Add provolone cheese and stir until the cheese melts.

I serve mine on hamburger buns. You could also use sub rolls.

***For those following Weight Watchers, you will need to add points for whatever bread you serve them on. Please note: I did not like them on wheat buns. I’ve tried it on white buns and I loved it. One of those rare occasions where the bread did make a big difference. I would rather spend 1 additional smart point and be satisfied with the meal.

I also do not recommend changing the cheese. I have made it two ways, once with provolone and I loved it. The other time, I tried substituting the provolone with reduced fat mozzarella and the flavor was just not the same. It was only one smart point difference so I’m sticking to the provolone version because it is delicious.

To make lean ground chicken, I buy skinless boneless chicken breast and trim them well. Cut them in 2×2 chunks and process them in the Ninja. It takes less than 3-4 minutes to trim and process. Much easier then trying to find 98% fat free chicken or turkey. You will also know exactly what is in your ground meat.
